Ο σπουδάζων την στωική φιλοσοφία ονομάζεται "προκόπτων", από το ρήμα προκόπτω,  δηλαδή προκόβω, προοδεύω. Αισθάνεται ταπεινός μπροστά στο δύσκολο έργο της κατάκτησης της σοφίας. Γνωρίζει τις αδυναμίες του, με υπομονή και επιμονή κάθε μέρα προκόβει. Ο μαθητής της στωικής φιλοσοφίας σπουδάζει το θάνατο κάθε μέρα κι έχει μνήμη θανάτου.
